Domitian's Reign: Duration and Political Landscape
Domitian ascended to the throne in 81 CE after the sudden death of his older brother, Titus. While Titus was known for his relatively short but popular reign, Domitian’s rule lasted significantly longer, extending for a total of 15 years, from 81 CE to 96 CE. His reign was marked by significant administrative and military efforts but also by his increasingly autocratic style of governance.
Length of Rule
Domitian’s 15-year reign made him one of the longer-serving emperors of the early imperial period, particularly in comparison to other emperors who had short-lived or tumultuous reigns. During his time as emperor, Domitian focused on strengthening the imperial bureaucracy, expanding the Roman frontier, and pursuing major building projects, including the construction of new temples and the expansion of the imperial palace.
However, his approach to governance gradually became more authoritarian, and he began to consolidate power in his own hands, sidelining the Senate and taking control of the military. Domitian also promoted himself as a divinely appointed ruler, demanding recognition as "Dominus et Deus" (Lord and God), which alienated many of Rome's political elites. shutdown123
